Young Explorers Summer Day Camp 2012

Young Explorers Summer Day Camp 2012
Event on 2012-07-03 06:00:00

If you do not wish to register online, click here.

Send your child on an adventure exploring nature and biodiversity. Campers spend a week learning about the natural world through participating in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities and games with new friends. Children will explore our 44.5-hectare (110 acre) botanical garden and will also discover other amazing sites on the UBC campus including the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, Nitobe Memorial Garden, UBC Farm and UBC Aquatic Centre.

Young Explorers Summer Day Camp is a weeklong summer camp for children aged 7-11. Older and younger children learn side by side in our age-integrated camp. Participants benefit from contributing and learning together though different activities and challenges that can be customized to individual campers needs. The camp accommodates a maximum of 30 children per week with a 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio.

We have two great programs to choose from:
The Eco Explorer program investigates the remarkable link that humans have with the environment. Together we will explore how different cultures interact with nature, learn about wild and cultivated foods, and discover how to effectively and safely cohabitate with wildlife.  Activities include forest scavenger hunts, photo safaris, cooking, wild plant tasting, and off-site excursions to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, Nitobe Memorial Garden and the UBC Aquatic Centre!

The Garden Explorer program teaches skills and knowledge to become a friendly gardener! Campers will get their hands dirty catching squirmy insects, conjure up (almost) magical potions, and cook up a storm with weird vegetables!  Making compost tea, wildlife gardening, water conservation, plant needs and surprising plant allies including beneficial insects and companion plants are just of few of the topics in this program. Visits to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, the UBC Farm and the Aquatic Centre are some of the excursions on the menu!

Click here to see an example of a typical day at the Young Explorer Summer Camp!

*A camp hat can be purchased for . The hat is black with 'Young Explorers Camp at UBC Botanical Garden' written in green letters. Select the quantity of Camp Hat wanted in the above menu. Hats are one size fits most and are available in limited quantities.

Tinderbox: India & its Neighbours

Indians and Pakistanis are of the same people: Why then have their nations moved on such different trajectories since freedom in 1947?

Acclaimed journalist, politician and thinker M.J. Akbar will lead the audience on a historical whodunit to trace the journey of an idea, and the events, people, circumstances and mindset that divided India. His investigation spans a thousand years, and an extraordinary cast: visionaries, opportunists, statesmen, tyrants, plunderers, generals, and theologians. There is no better guide to the subcontinent's past, and a glimpse into its future than Akbar, author of the recently released book, Tinderbox. In conversation with Akbar will be Joseph Caron.

For a chance to socialize and network both before and after the talk with MJ Akbar and Joseph Caron, buy ‘Reception (Includes Talk)' tickets. Indulge in an evening of good conversation and fine food and drink.

Mrigya in Concert /

Mrigya is a world music band from New Delhi. A rich blend of classical Hindustani, Qawwali, Blues & Jazz lends their music a unique texture woven by several cultures. Mrigya burst onto the international scene 11 years ago when they won the Herald Angel award for Best Music Act at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They returned to the festival the following year, and won the Tap Water Award for music that promotes communal harmony. Since then, they have toured India and the world to much acclaim.

At the Indian Summer Festival, Mrigya returns to their roots by presenting an evening of Hindustani and Sufi music.

The first half of the evening will be a Sufi/Qawwali duet by Gulaam Qadar and Sukriti Sen, accompanied by Gyan Singh on the Tabla. Qawwali is a form of devotional singing rooted in the mystical tradition of the Sufis, for whom music is a powerful transformatory experience. Gulaam Qadar is one of the most sought after Qawwali singers, from the  legendary Hapur Gharana. His ancestors were for centuries the court musicians to the Mughal emperors.Following an intermission, there will be a Hindustani violin recital by Sharat Chandra Srivastava, the foremost disciple of his illustrious grandfather Sri Joi Srivastava of the Senia Gharana (the same acclaimed group to which the likes of Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar belong).

A concert for those who believe that music transcends all borders.

Mrigya is presented in collaboration with the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, where Mrigya takes the stage over the weekend July 14-15.
