  • SubUrbia, a play by Eric Bogosian

SubUrbia, a play by Eric Bogosian
    Event on 2012-07-14 20:00:00
Ninja Pirates Theatre Society is pleased to present SubUrbia by Eric Bogosian at the Blake Snyder Theatre at Go Studios in Vancouver, directed by Anthony Shim. The play is a snapshot of the lives of several suburban youth who have resigned themselves to an aimless existence until their formerly geeky classmate, now an accomplished musician, returns home for a visit. It runs July 3-8, and July 10-14. For Jeff, the protagonist, this is the end of the world: an endless cycle of pizza, beer, sex, and Oreos, while hanging around outside convenience stores and he wouldn't change a thing. Jeff and his crew talk about Sarajevo, the Pope, AIDS, and Sesame Street as a way to pass the time until the girls show up. For all their philosophizing, however, Tim the Air Force drop-out acts out in terrifying violence against the Pakistani convenience store owner who only wants them off his property. Ninja Pirates Theatre Society's productions make you feel like you are watching a real life event. For this play, these well-established actors of stage and film embrace their cultural diversity to explore issues of co-existing in modern suburbia. Their aim is to create a connection between the audience and what they are seeing on stage and hope that it will resonate outside the theatre. "Our projects confront alienation and the difficulty of communicating…a gesture, a simple word or phrase…allow us to see the beauty of Truth, if only for a moment" -(from the Ninja Pirates Theatre Society's mandate). SubUrbia runs July 3-8 and July 10-14, 8 pm at the Blake Snyder Theatre, 112 E. 3rd Ave, Vancouver. Tickets are . www.ninjapiratestheatre.com

  • Calm Abiding Meditation in Tibetan Buddhism

Calm Abiding Meditation in Tibetan Buddhism
    Event on 2012-06-28 19:00:00
Thu, June 28, 2012 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM C. K. CHOI BUILDING FOR THE INSTITUTE OF ASIAN RESEARCH. Calm Abiding Meditation (Shi-nay) is said to be very crucial in Tibetan Buddhist meditation. While Tibetan Buddhism can be regarded as the most complete form of the study of theory and Buddhist philosophy, in practice several areas seem very weak. Why is the practice of Calm Abiding meditation so neglected in Tibetan Buddhism? There will be no form of enlightenment without calm abiding meditation despite how much Tibetan Buddhists promote Dzogchen, Mahamudra, Vajrayana and Enlightenment in one life time. Tsarpa Lochen Lama Choedak Rinpoche, undertook 12 years rigorous training as a Sakya Tibetan Buddhist monk, several of those under the guidance of His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, one of the finest Tibetan teachers of this time (b 1920 – d 2007). He completed a six month Calm Abiding Meditation in 1977 as part of his three year solitary Lamdre retreat under the tutelage of Kyabje Chogye Trichen Rinpoche. Choedak Rinpoche is the founder and director of 20 centres in Australia, he has conducted a popular annual ten-day Calm Abiding Meditation retreat in Australia for the last 17 years and will be conducting a 3-day Calm Abiding Meditation Retreat at the UBC Asian Centre from 29 June to 2 July. He is also translating Rongton's monumental commentary on Kamalashila's Stages of Meditaion (Bhavanakrma) I, II, and III. Further information on the retreat is available at www.pnwretreats.com. • Obstructions with Felix Culpa

    Obstructions with Felix Culpa
    Event on 2012-06-30 20:00:00

Following three sold-out iterations of the Hive party series, Vancouver's Progress Lab network of indie theatre-makers comes together to test the theory that creativity feeds on limits.

Inspired in part by the film The Five Obstructions by Jørgen Leth and Lars Von Trier, the core artists of each participating company submits, a few at a time and under a cold spotlight, to a list of obstructions delivered by a shadowy emcee. The companies are then commanded to create their next production around those limitations. The obstructions for each company have been developed in secret by their peers – a custom-designed set of obstacles that will prompt each artist to adapt to a new approach to making theatre.

This round of OBSTRUCTIONS features Felix Culpa, a company well known for their worldly, literate, gutsy and substantive work.  Felix Culpa has been given the following Obstructions:

    1.  The subject matter must be autobiographical

    2.  A limit of 100 words must be used

    3.  It must be done outside a conventional theatre.  Site specific, but not at either David [Bloom, Co-Artistic Director]'s or Linda [Quibell, Co-Artistic Director]'s house.

2011 was an incredible year for LAZY RICH. At the start of the year he was seen as the underdog to watch for, but by the end of it he not only proved that right but also accomplished what is undeniably an incredible leap in success.

A UK native and a resident of Canada, Lazy Rich is heading full steam into 2012, a year that promises to be nothing short of an intense and well-deserved return on an incredible amount of hard work both as a producer and a touring artist.

As a producer, Rich or LAZY as most like to refer to him, has been anything but! In a span of less than 5 years in the studio he has scored an incredible amount of production success, both as chart toppers and underground hits with #1s on Beatport, Trackitdown, Juno, The Buzz Chart and over 100 tracks charting in the Beatport electro top 100.

He has done remix work for such musical icons as Lady Gaga, Fatboy Slim, Deadmau5, Chris Lake, Morgan Page, Zedd, Porter Robinson, X-Press-2 and many more while collaborating on tracks with Chris Lake and Porter Robinson.

Rich’s music has been featured on radio shows such as Pete Tong, Judge Jules and Kissy Sell Out on BBC Radio 1; to name a few while his own radio show, ‘The Lazy Rich Show’, has become one of the most listened to and influential electro house podcasts.

His SoundCloud page marked an amazing Half-Million plays at the start of Dec, 2011, just 12 Months after its inception, while within the industry he has gained support from heavyweights such as Tiesto, David Guetta, Skrillex, Dada Life, Chuckie, Pete Tong, Norman Cook, Laidback Luke, Carl Cox, Armand Van Helden, Fedde Le Grande and many more.

Considered one of the forward thinking leaders of the Electro-House genre, Rich is credited for being a pioneer in 'complextro', a cutting edge sound on the forefront of the electronic music evolution. His style of gut-wrenchingly intense and audaciously epic house music has put countless big records in his musical arsenal and paved the way for him to create his own signature niche in the market, attracting remix requests from electronic music as well as pop music stars, while Television Ads and Hollywood films can now be added to that list. In 2012 we can expect to see releases on labels such as Dim Mak / Owsla, Ultra Records and Interscope, while his own label Big Fish continues its assault as one of the top electro-house labels, priding itself on showcasing new talent, having helped kick-start the careers of Porter Robinson, Zedd and Lucky Date.

Rich has also been proving his ground as a performing DJ. Having 12 years of experience, teamed with a natural ability to read the crowd and respond with precision, he is quickly gaining a reputation that’s setting him apart as a DJ’s DJ and a professional rather than the onslaught of the cliché digital DJ generation.

Focused on the US market for the past year, Rich has paid his dues with an incredible coverage of the scene while steadily expanding into the international tour market. Plans for a long awaited European and Asia tour are in the works for 2012.

With a string of new projects on the way, his first full scale music video, a long line up of slated remixes, teamed an impressive tour schedule in the works, the future looks incredibly bright for this rapidly rising star, who is anything but Lazy.

Tickets Double Bill Plus Q&A advance/ door https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/248170 Plus limited seats available single screening at the Door THE YES MEN – follows a couple of anti-corporate activist-pranksters as they impersonate World Trade Organization spokesmen on TV and at business conferences around the world. The story follows Andy and Mike from their beginnings with GWBush.com, and on to their tasteless parody of the WTO's website. Some visitors don't notice the site is a fake, and send speaking invitations meant for the real WTO. Mike and Andy play along with the ruse and soon find themselves attending important functions as WTO representatives. Delighted to speak for the organization they oppose, Andy and Mike don thrift-store suits and set out to shock their unwitting audiences with darkly comic satires on global free trade. Weirdly, the experts don't notice the joke and seem to agree with every terrible idea the two can come up with. Exhausted by their failed attempts to shock, Mike and Andy take a whole new approach for one final lecture. The Yes Men is directed by Dan Olman, Sarah Price, and Chris Smith, whose previous credits include the 1999 Sundance Winner "American Movie." It was released by United Artists. THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD – is a screwball true story about two gonzo political activists who, posing as top executives of giant corporations, lie their way into big business conferences and pull off the world's most outrageous pranks. From New Orleans to India to New York City, armed with little more than cheap thrift-store suits, the Yes Men squeeze raucous comedy out of all the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet. Brüno meets Michael Moore in this gut-busting wake-up call that proves a little imagination can go a long way towards vanquishing the Cult of Greed. Who knew fixing the world could be so much fun? http://theyesmenfixtheworld.com/ http://theyesmen.org/

It's been thirty six years since the inaugural Powell Street Festival, and in that time we've grown from a small community event to a full-blown arts & culture celebration attended by thousands each year. We are grateful to all the participants, volunteers, funders, attendees, and our DTES community for supporting our efforts these past number of years! In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming you to Oppenheimer Park for the 36th Annual Powell Street Festival!

The Powell Street Festival is an annual celebration of Japanese Canadian arts, culture and heritage that features something for everyone: dance, music, film and video, visual arts, martial arts demos, amateur sumo tournament, craft vendors, traditional displays, and of course, tons of scrumptious Japanese food.

PSF is the largest event of its kind in Canada and the longest running community arts festival in the Lower Mainland. We provide a much-needed venue for emerging and established, professional and amateur, and traditional and contemporary artists in the Japanese Canadian and Asian Canadian communities.

The Wet Spots’ East Side Spectacular!!
    Event on 2012-06-29 20:00:00
The Wet Spots' East Side Spectacular!! An Outrageous Adult Variety Show! Award-winning international musical sex comedy duo The Wet Spots present a full-blown, outrageous, adult-themed monthly variety show at the Rio! Friday June 29th doors at 8pm Show at 9pm Tickets only advance/ at the Door 19+ adults only! https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/253452 The Wet Spots were inspired to create East Side Spectacular by their time working with the Olivier-Award-Winning variety show La Clique in London's West End. "In La Clique, there were amazing acts on the bill but much of the magic came from how they would whiz your attention around the venue one performer might end his dance number by freezing in place and then being lifted and carried away by the strong man from the next segment. You were really taken on a journey of amazement. We want to bring that fast pace and fluidity to a Vancouver stage." But be warned though this is not a show for everyone. The Wet Spots are known for their raunchy, adult-themed songs which include such favourites as "Do You Take It In the Ass?" and "The Perversions of Yesteryear". Their act has won numerous theatrical awards in Canada, the USA and Australia, and they have performed at such venues as Massey Hall, The Sydney Opera House, The London Hippodrome and the Public Theater in New York City. This smart, sexy sensibility runs throughout the show, with burlesque dance, blue stand-up comedy, weird short films and decidedly naughty outrageous variety. "So much theatrical entertainment these days is geared towards a family market" says Woods. "It's good to have a night of music, dance, film and comedy that's a little more sex, drugs and rock n' roll." This next show Friday June 29th has a fantastic line up! A mid Summer nights Wet Dream!
