Dancing on the Edge Festival 2012

Dancing on the Edge Festival 2012
Event on 2012-07-05 00:00:00

Founded in 1988 by the Firehall Theatre Society, the Dancing on the Edge festival incorporated in 1998 as its own society. Created in direct response to the local dance communities' need for a supported place to perform their work, the festival has evolved into an annual event which presents on average thirty performances in mixed programs and full length works from over twenty different dance companies and choreographers from across Canada each festival.

The festival is recognized for its support of new works through its presentations, commissions and residencies programs. Artists such as Paul Andre Fortier, Wen Wei Dance, the 605 Collective, Serge Bennethan, Peter Bingham, Amber Funk Barton, Lola MacLaughlin, Joe Laughlin, Karen Jamieson, Kokoro Dance, Chick Snipper, Alvin Tolentino and Brian Webb, Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg to name just a few have all benefitted from the DOTE's commitment to dance and to bringing dance in all shapes and forms to our audiences.

We invite you to join us for the 23rd annual Dancing on the Edge festival as we push forward on another journey to create, inspire, and enthrall our audiences through dance.

Enjoy!

Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker

"You are now, all of you, answering a call." Their sound is as hard to describe as their name is to say. Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, better known as USS, are like a campfire afterparty with a jungle-rave vibe, progressively two-stepping their way to a dance folk cuddle. Pure intention is the scope they aim through, eliciting dance-floor eruptions is what they’re known for. Science rap on breakbeat tracks anyone? Ash Boo-Schultz and Human Kebab hail from the towns of Markham and Stouffville, ON., respectively and respectfully. Although they attended rival high schools, vocalist/guitarist Ash and hypeman/turntablist extraordinaire Kebab didn't collide until years later. While employed by the same local golf course, fate ushered them both into a beer fridge that needed reorganizing. A sudden alchemy filled the air between the artists. It was love at first random concept – the catalyst moment to their self-proclaimed "long, drawn-out, overnight success." The memories are many. In 2008, the band maimed mainstage at 102.1 The Edge's Edgefest alongside Sam Roberts, Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots. Next was the World Electronic Music Festival, playing alongside drum n' bass pioneers Andy C., Mickey Finn and DJ SS. Crossing into 2009 and over the US border, USS veered to the infamous Viper Room in Los Angeles and then showcased the legendary Mercury Lounge in New York City. That spring, they shattered the Sonic Boom Festival in Edmonton to the frenzy of 11,000 fans. A spot at the Toronto International Film Festival, three successful western Canadian tours, two CASBY Awards for Best New Artist and Favourite New Single, a Canadian Independent Music Award for Favourite Group of the Year, a Canadian Organization of Campus Activities Award for Best Emerging Artist, and even an Applied Arts Magazine Award for album packaging for Questamation, along with global digital sales have the world embracing the strange they want to see. The wide scale audience singalongs and dancefloor pandemoniums are sure to continue. USS are singing and scratching up new storms, alongside producer Tawgs Salter (Lights, Elliot Yamin, Josh Groban). The studio's secluded sanctuary allows for frequent intermissions of wandering the woods, wishing on stars, and quiet moments of self-reflection. "Uplifting lyrics on ska – plus jungle music – equals immune system support." – Ash Boo-Schultz Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have discovered that upbeat, positive music relaxes the inner lining of the arteries and reduces blood pressure. When science meets spirit, you’re being the strange you want to see in the world. Welcome to USS and the soundtrack of possibility.

The 4th Annual Carnaval del Sol, the day we all shine together Vancouver's Latin American Celebration of Art and Culture, present by LatinCouver, the Latin American plaza in Vancouver is a two-day, highly publicized cultural festival attracting more than 50,000 children and adults. Carnaval del Sol 2012

The main event, scheduled for June 24 and June 30th 2012, takes place on Granville Street occupying five blocks of the pedestrian strip downtown. As well, our Latin American plaza includes an open-air food court that offers authentic Latin cuisine that is sure to attract the appetite of many Vancouverites and many activities for children!

Event on 2012-06-29 20:00:00
Friday 29-Jun *HIP CITY MUSIC + TD JAZZ FESTIVAL presents: JORDAN KLASSEN & SIDNEY YORK (Early Show) Jordan Klassen makes music built out of pure imagination. A truly alluring voice, laid upon beds of shimmering strings, caressed guitar, and coaxing percussion. His latest work takes such a foundation, and continues to build?. & “Part glitzy pop, part avant-pop, and part fun” (More Than a Feeling), Sidney York is the long-distance relationship of three former band geeks: opera singer Brandi Sidoryk (“Sid”), oboist Sheryl Reinhardt, and bassoonist Krista Wodelet. Brought together in part by high school honor band, and in part by a serendipitous connection on a certain friendly Canadian airline, they join forces from their respective home bases of Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto to create an avant-pop renaissance of the unusual instruments they grew up with. Sidney York’s three frontwomen deliver a live experience that rollercoasters from bubbly, clap-and-whistle-along pop to sweet and sexy vocal harmonies, and their powerful onstage presence always leaves audiences wanting more.
